With HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series officially in motion, the fandom has been buzzing, and not just with excitement. The long awaited cast announcements have finally arrived, and while there's plenty of curiosity and anticipation, there's also been no shortage of debate.

The newly announced trio. Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Theo Somolu as Ron Weasley, and Bronte Carmichael as Hermione Granger have sparked immediate conversation. For some, it’s a refreshing start, a chance to reimagine the iconic story with new faces. But others feel that key details from the books are being missed again.

One detail in particular has reignited an old controversy: Harry’s eye color. In the books, Harry is described over and over as having green eyes like his mother, Lily. It’s not just a passing detail Snape’s entire emotional arc hinges on that resemblance. Yet once again, the chosen actor appears to have blue eyes, just like Daniel Radcliffe did in the original films.

Fans have taken to social media to express their frustration:

  • “Dominic McLaughlin, who will play Harry Potter. This is perfect, just one thing. The eyes — Harry is meant to have green eyes. But in this picture, it looks blue.”

  • “Black hair. Green eyes. How is this so hard?”

  • “It can’t possibly be that difficult to find a child actor with dark hair and green eyes.”

It’s not just about nitpicking. For many fans, especially those who grew up on the books, the green eyes are a symbol of continuity of Harry’s emotional link to Lily, and by extension, to Snape’s redemption arc. This detail, seemingly minor to outsiders, is seen as a foundational part of the character.

Still, not everyone is unhappy. Some fans are focusing on the opportunity for new storytelling and a more in-depth adaptation. With each season set to cover one book, there’s a chance we’ll finally get the full narrative treatment that the movies couldn’t deliver.

Casting controversies haven’t stopped with Harry, either. Paapa Essiedu has been cast as Severus Snape, and reactions have been mixed. Some argue that changing Snape’s race alters the character’s dynamic and visual ties to his past—particularly in relation to James and Lily Potter. Others see this as a progressive and inspired choice, pointing to Essiedu’s powerful acting background with the Royal Shakespeare Company and acclaimed roles in modern dramas.

Adding to the debate, John Lithgow, best known for his work in American television and theatre has been cast as Albus Dumbledore. While there’s no questioning his acting skills, his nationality has raised eyebrows among fans, who associate the role strongly with British heritage and cadence.

HBO’s response to the public reaction has been to disable comments on their official social media posts related to casting announcements, a move that suggests they anticipated backlash and want to protect the actors—especially the younger ones—from online negativity.

One person who is unbothered by the criticisms? J.K. Rowling. She publicly supported the cast on X, writing, “All three are wonderful. I couldn’t be happier.”

The series, expected to debut in 2026 or 2027, aims to be a more faithful and expansive take on the source material. Whether the execution will live up to the expectations is another story.

So let’s open this up to the community:

  • Are these casting choices bold and refreshing, or straying too far from what made the books resonate?

  • Does Harry’s eye colour really matter, or does it symbolize a bigger disconnect between the source material and its adaptations?

  • Are we ready to embrace a new generation of actors stepping into legendary roles?

  • Is this series shaping up to be the adaptation we’ve always wanted, or is it already missing the mark?

Whatever your perspective, let’s keep it thoughtful, open minded, and rooted in what makes this story worth talking about all over again. Looking forward to hearing everyone’s take.
