Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Illustrated Edition by Levi Pinfold Is Coming Soon… and Fans Are Getting a New Look at the Story

Harry Potter fans are getting ready for another beautiful addition to the Illustrated Edition collection, with Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince: Illustrated Edition arriving on 6 October 2026. The sixth book in J.K. Rowling's series will be brought to life with brand new artwork by award winning illustrator Levi Pinfold, giving readers the opportunity to experience one of the darker Harry Potter stories through a completely different artistic style. 

 

 

This release is particularly interesting because Levi Pinfold is taking over the Illustrated Edition series from Jim Kay. Kay illustrated the first five books, beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2015 and continuing through Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. His artwork became a huge part of the identity of these editions, with his detailed interpretations of Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, the Forbidden Forest and the characters becoming familiar to generations of Harry Potter readers.

 

When Bloomsbury announced that Pinfold would illustrate the final two books, Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows, there was naturally a lot of curiosity about how the change would affect the look of the collection. Pinfold has his own distinctive artistic style, so rather than trying to recreate Kay's work, the new books are expected to bring a fresh interpretation to the final chapters of the story. 

 

We have already been given a first look at some of Pinfold's work, including the new cover and several illustrations from inside the book. The artwork includes some of the most important and atmospheric scenes from Half Blood Prince, including Spinner's End, where Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy visit Severus Snape, as well as the terrifying cave where Harry and Dumbledore go searching for a Horcrux. Artwork featuring Katie Bell and the cursed necklace has also been revealed. 

 

 

These scenes give us a good idea of the direction Pinfold is taking with the book. Half Blood Prince is very different in tone from the earlier stories, with Voldemort's return becoming increasingly important, the Death Eaters gaining power and Harry beginning to understand just how much danger the wizarding world is facing. There is still plenty of humour, friendship and everyday life at Hogwarts, but there is also a much darker feeling running underneath the entire story.

 

That darker atmosphere should make this particular Illustrated Edition fascinating to look through. The cave sequence, for example, is one of the most frightening moments in the series, as Harry and Dumbledore enter a remote cave to retrieve a Horcrux and are eventually attacked by the Inferi. The film gave us one interpretation of that scene, but Pinfold has been able to approach it entirely through his own imagination, which could make the finished illustration very different from what fans remember seeing on screen.

 

 

The same applies to Spinner's End and Draco Malfoy's increasingly worrying storyline. The sixth book spends much more time exploring the darker side of the Wizarding World, and Pinfold has some very dramatic moments to work with. Harry is also learning more about Tom Riddle through Dumbledore's memories, giving the book an opportunity to explore Voldemort's childhood and the events that eventually shaped him into the most feared dark wizard of his generation.

 

There has already been plenty of discussion among fans about the change in illustrator. Jim Kay's artwork has been part of the Illustrated Editions for more than ten years, so it is understandable that some readers are finding the transition difficult. His versions of the characters have become the images many fans automatically picture when they think about these editions, and seeing Harry, Dumbledore and the other characters interpreted by someone else will inevitably take some getting used to.

 

At the same time, other fans are excited about having a fresh artistic approach for the final two books. Pinfold has won major awards for his illustration work, and his style gives Half Blood Prince a slightly different atmosphere while still feeling at home in the Wizarding World. There is something quite appealing about allowing another artist to interpret these stories rather than attempting to make the final two books look exactly like the first five.

The new edition will contain 432 pages and will be released as a hardback on 6 October. There will also be a Deluxe Illustrated Slipcase Edition, which is scheduled to follow on 3 November 2026. For collectors, this makes the release an important one because it begins the final stage of the Illustrated Edition collection. Once Half Blood Prince arrives, there will only be one more book left for Pinfold to illustrate, and that will be Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. That final volume will bring the Illustrated Edition project to its conclusion and give Pinfold the enormous task of illustrating some of the most emotional and dramatic moments in the entire Harry Potter story.

 

 

There are already plenty of scenes from Half Blood Prince that fans will be hoping to see in the finished book. Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore, the memories of Tom Riddle, Slughorn's return to Hogwarts, Draco's secret mission, the Room of Requirement, the discovery of the Horcruxes and the events on the Astronomy Tower are all major moments that could look completely different when interpreted through Pinfold's artwork.

That's really what makes these books so enjoyable. The story itself has not changed, and neither has the experience of reading Rowling's original words, but the illustrations give fans another way to imagine the world. Even if you've read Half Blood Prince many times and watched the film repeatedly, opening a new illustrated edition can make familiar scenes feel fresh again.

 

The timing of the release is also rather interesting because Harry Potter is about to enter another major period of attention. The new HBO television adaptation is arriving this Christmas, while the Illustrated Edition collection is continuing to give fans a new visual interpretation of the original books. For fans who have grown up with the novels and films, it means there are now several different versions of the Wizarding World to explore.

Personally, I think Half Blood Prince is a particularly good choice for Pinfold's first full book in the series because there is such a dramatic change in atmosphere compared with the earlier stories. Hogwarts is still magical, but there is a growing sense that something terrible is coming, and much of the book is about Harry discovering the history behind Voldemort and preparing for the final confrontation.

 

We have already seen enough of Pinfold's artwork to know that this will not simply be a repeat of the previous Illustrated Editions. The change in style is noticeable, but that could ultimately be one of the best things about the new book. Fans can appreciate what Jim Kay created while also allowing Pinfold to put his own mark on the final two chapters.

 

With the release now only a few weeks away, it won't be long before fans can finally see the complete collection of illustrations and decide for themselves how the new artwork compares with the first five books.
