The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened… HBO Has Found Its Dobby, Tom Riddle and Ginny Weasley

Well, HBO has just opened the door to the Chamber of Secrets, and we’ve got three very interesting new additions to the Harry Potter cast. Lenny Rush has been cast as Dobby, Billy Barratt will play the young Tom Riddle, and Bonnie Hill will take over the role of Ginny Weasley for Season 2.

 

 

I think Dobby is probably the announcement that will get the biggest reaction from fans. He is such an important part of Chamber of Secrets, and after Toby Jones gave us that wonderfully chaotic voice in the original films, whoever takes over was always going to have a lot to live up to.

Lenny Rush is only 17, but he already has quite a bit of acting experience, including Doctor Who and Enola Holmes 2. It will be interesting to see whether HBO gives Dobby a noticeably different personality from the version we already know, or whether they lean into the cheeky, slightly unhinged house elf we remember.

 

 

Then there’s Billy Barratt as Tom Riddle, and this one could be particularly interesting because Tom's story is going to have much more room to breathe in a television series. In Chamber of Secrets, Harry discovers the diary belonging to a mysterious Hogwarts student named Tom Riddle, and eventually learns the terrifying truth about who Riddle really is. Barratt will be playing the young version of the character, giving HBO a chance to explore one of the earliest pieces of Voldemort's history.

Christian Coulson's performance as Tom Riddle in the original Chamber of Secrets film is still one of the most memorable parts of that movie, so once again there is a difficult comparison waiting for the new actor. The advantage HBO has is time. We could potentially get more of Riddle's conversations with Harry and more of the mystery surrounding the diary, rather than having everything squeezed into the running time of a single film.

 

And then we have Ginny Weasley.

 

 

Bonnie Hill will play Ginny from Season 2 onwards, taking over from Gracie Cochrane, who will still appear as Ginny during Season 1. Cochrane's departure was announced earlier this year, with her family saying she had made the difficult decision to leave the series after the first season because of unforeseen circumstances. HBO said at the time that it supported her decision and thanked her for her work.

 

The timing is actually quite important because Ginny becomes much more central to the story in Chamber of Secrets. She's no longer simply Ron's little sister who occasionally appears in the background. She becomes closely connected to the main mystery surrounding the Chamber, Tom Riddle's diary and the attacks happening around Hogwarts. So Bonnie Hill is stepping into the role just as Ginny's story becomes considerably more important.

It also means we're going to have an interesting situation where one actress plays Ginny in the first season and another takes over in the second. We've seen recasting in the Harry Potter world before, of course, but this one is happening right at the beginning of the new series, so it will be interesting to see how audiences react when Ginny returns with a different face.

 

What I really like about this announcement, though, is that HBO is now starting to build the world beyond the first season. Season 1 hasn't even premiered yet, but Season 2 is already taking shape, and these aren't random background characters. Dobby, Tom Riddle and Ginny are all deeply connected to the story of Chamber of Secrets. HBO has also confirmed that production on Season 2 is scheduled to begin this autumn.

And just imagine the first proper scene with Dobby.

 

Harry is finally back at the Dursleys, things are going badly as usual, and then this strange little house elf suddenly appears in his bedroom trying to stop him from returning to Hogwarts. If HBO gets that introduction right, it could be one of those moments where longtime fans suddenly realise, "Oh wow, we're actually doing Chamber of Secrets now."

 

I'm also really curious about Tom Riddle. The diary sequence gives the series a chance to make the story genuinely creepy, especially if HBO spends more time showing Harry slowly becoming convinced that he can trust the person inside the diary. We already know how it ends, but that doesn't mean they can't make the journey there much more unsettling.

 

So now we have Dobby, Tom Riddle and a new Ginny Weasley waiting for us in Season 2.

 

The Chamber is definitely starting to look very busy.
