A Magical What-If?

Veteran actor John Lithgow recently revealed that he was once in the running to play Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series, a role that ultimately went to Richard Harris and later Michael Gambon. Lithgow’s comments have sparked intrigue among fans, many of whom are now imagining what the beloved Hogwarts headmaster might have been like with a different portrayal.

Why Lithgow Turned Down Harry Potter

In a recent interview, Lithgow reflected on his decision to pass on the opportunity to join the Harry Potter franchise. At the time, he was hesitant to commit to a long-running film series, fearing it would take over his schedule and limit his ability to pursue other projects.

"I was approached, but I just didn’t see myself committing to such a massive franchise," Lithgow admitted. "At that stage in my career, I wanted more flexibility."

This isn’t the first time Lithgow has turned down a major franchise role. Over the years, the Third Rock from the Sun star has been linked to several blockbuster projects but has often opted for a mix of film, television, and theater work instead.

The Legacy of Dumbledore

When Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) began production, the role of Dumbledore was filled by the legendary Richard Harris. However, Harris sadly passed away after completing the second film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). The filmmakers then turned to Michael Gambon, who played the character from Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) onward, delivering a distinct and sometimes controversial take on the wise headmaster.

Lithgow’s revelation raises an interesting "what-if" scenario. His deep, theatrical presence and history of playing larger-than-life characters suggest he could have brought a unique take to Dumbledore—perhaps a mix between Harris’s warmth and Gambon’s intensity.

Fan Reactions: A Missed Opportunity or a Lucky Escape?

The Harry Potter fandom has been buzzing over Lithgow’s comments, with many speculating how the franchise might have changed if he had accepted the role. Some believe his commanding stage presence would have been a perfect fit for Dumbledore’s wise and enigmatic nature.

"I love Lithgow, but I can’t imagine anyone but Gambon after Harris passed," one fan wrote on social media.

Others think he could have brought a fresh energy to the series. "Lithgow as Dumbledore? That would have been amazing. He has the perfect voice for it!" another fan commented.

Could Lithgow Join the Harry Potter Universe in the Future?

With Warner Bros. working on a rebooted Harry Potter TV series, some fans are now calling for Lithgow to be considered for a role—perhaps even as the new Dumbledore. Given his acting range, he could also fit into other wizarding roles, such as a member of the Ministry of Magic or a Hogwarts professor.

For now, Lithgow remains content with his decision, but his revelation serves as a fascinating reminder of how different the Harry Potter films could have been.

What do you think? Would John Lithgow have made a great Dumbledore, or did the role go to the right actors?
