Harry Potter: Hogwarts Legacy

Today Warner Bros Games unveiled a Harry Potter game, "Hogwarts Legacy," that will let players experience life as a student at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 1800s. We’ve known there was a major Harry Potter video game in the works for some time. In October 2018, footage was leaked showing an impressive third-person adventure set in Hogwarts with strong RPG elements. The game preview on the Warner Bros site says, “Your character is a student who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart. You have received a late acceptance to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and soon discover that you are no ordinary student: you possess an unusual ability to perceive and master Ancient Magic. Only you can decide if you will protect this secret for the good of all, or yield to the temptation of more sinister magic.”

Players will have access to spells, potions and magical creatures, and although the underlying story wasn't revealed the narration suggested it would be shaped by the choices the player makes in-game. Set in the late 1800s, this takes place long before the events of both Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and the Harry Potter series proper. Of course, Hogwarts is stuck in a Victorian boarding school time warp, so the locations we see in the trailer will be familiar to anyone who’s seen the movies. In addition, we’ll be able to explore the Wizarding World beyond the Hogwarts walls, as the footage shows a visit to Hogsmeade, a ride atop winged horses and what may be a peek inside Azkaban.

Hogwarts Legacy is an immersive, open-world action RPG set in the world first introduced in the Harry Potter books. Now you can take control of the action and be at the center of your own adventure in the wizarding world. Embark on a journey through familiar and new locations as you explore and discover fantastic beasts, customize your character and craft potions, master spell casting, upgrade talents, and become the wizard you want to be.

The role-playing videogame, developed by Disney Infinity developer Avalanche, will release next year (2021) on PS5, PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One consoles, and PC.

Players can “grow their magical abilities by mastering spells, brewing potions and taming fantastic beasts,” Warner Bros Games said. The game will include familiar locations such as the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade Village. Ultimately, the story in Hogwarts Legacy will traverse "an expansive world filled with perilous dangers tied to the wizarding world’s long-forgotten past" and what's described as "an unusual ability" that only the player possesses.
