One of the many things I find really cool about Harry Potter is J.K.'s subtle nods to mythology.

  • Hermione is named after Hermes
  • Fluffy basically IS Cerberus
  •  McGonagall is based  on Athena, or her Roman counterpart Minerva
  • Rubeus Hagrid is based on the kind giant Hagrid Rubes. He was banished from Mount Olympus, but still took care of the animals.
  • Argus Filch is named after the giant with 100 eyes Argus Panoptes
