I was definitely not into Harry Potter fanfiction when I started writing fanfiction, so I was quite late to the HP fanfiction bandwagon.

  • The first HP fanfiction I read was when I was 16. It had come up in my recommended section on Wattpad, and having never read any HP fanfiction, or any Drarry fanfiction, I thought I'd give it a go. I read it in one sitting, and fell in love with Harry Potter fanfiction from there.
  • The first HP fanfiction I posted was a Harry Potter Preferences book on Wattpad. It was a What He Does On Your Birthday, posted in honour of Daniel Radcliffe's birthday. That book changed my writing style, but also taught me a lot about writing fanfiction, where my priorities changed over the last five years.
  • My first review on a story was Drarry - It Was Just a Game on Wattpad. I think it was just along the lines of "this is incredible and you've introduced me to a whole new style of writing."
  • To receive my first comments on my Harry Potter Preferences was incredible. I'd written preferences before, but never about something as well loved as Harry Potter. I had to go back through the first chapter, and funnily enough it's a comment I don't get any more. It's "Please update. I loved this one." Which is really sweet, but also one I dreaded, especially with the requests open. It was a lot of pressure in some very stressful times in my life.
  • I'd love to have an answer to what keeps me coming back, but I really don't know. I think part of it is having an alternate perspective on the series. And the chance read and support other writers - it's so rewarding to realise that there are successful fanfiction authors within the fandom, and something if I ever get back into publishing my own fanfictions, I aspire to be.
  • About me: I'm 21, have been an avid HP fan since I was 15, and still write HP fanfiction to this day. Though I don't think I'll be sharing them any time soon.
  • What brought me to this forum in particular, was Twiiter. But the HP community as a whole, it was an escape from school and college. I had a rather unfortunate experience with writing for other fandoms, not due to the fans, but someone in my real life, and it took away all the safety and security I had from them. Harry Potter was a lot more accepted, and I felt a lot more comfortable in other peoples validation from that choice. I loved the community so much that it started to become part of personality and really feel like home.

If anyone wants to know more about me, about the story which brought me to the HP community, or just how I got started in HP fanfiction in general, feel free to reply or message. I'll try to reply as much as I can before I go on my travels (September 15th-November 5th), and will definitely check after I'm back.

  • Thanks 1

Ooh, this is a good one.

I discovered HP fanfiction when my then-roommate was writing a fanfic (self-inserty, Her/Snape, we were only a couple books into the series at that point) on... Fiction Alley.

Do you remember the first fanfiction you ever posted?

- HP?  That's on Ao3, probably, so likely "On A Dime; On a Smile."

- Anything at all?  That would've been roleplay fanfic from World of Darkness and... no.

Do you remember your first review on a story?

- nope!

Do you remember your first comments and feedback?

-nope!

What about HPFF has kept you coming back?

- The number of what-ifs, the broad fanon, the magic you can play with , the possibilities.

We want to know more about YOU, our users.

- hi!  I'm Lyn. I'm 43, I first got into Harry Potter with the first movie, and I first remember thinking fanfiction and making up stories in my head as a pre-teen - Xanth.

What initially brought you to our community?

- Twitter!  I was invited, and so I came. :-D

@xEmmaberryx - I have also found the Harry Potter fandom to be (generally), friendly, easy going, and forgiving.  It's less pressure than I was afraid it was going to be, and I really like that.

Mugglenet Fanfiction was my first ever venture! I wanted more HP once the movies were over and I found the mugglenet site and I haven't looked back! I haven't written HP fan fiction until very very recently - but I've already read it! My HP fanfiction is also based within the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child fandom, specifically with the characters Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy :D

Well i was always into righting and after watching the movies and then reading the books i was amazed! I later realized that people had extended the plot and created weird ships that completely baffled me i suddenly found myself hearing about fanfiction! I read quite a few but i distinctly remember one about harry and malfoy being in a secret relationship! I was so inspired by that that i decided to write my own fanfic! It started as harry and malfoy meating a different way and them being friends but i accidentally deleted it and decided to just make my own story! Same dynamics. Different characters. Different storline! It was so much fun that im now not just obsessed with Harry Potter, but fanfic aswell!

I found it through LiveJournal, back when that was still popular. I searched Harry Potter, and a LiveJournal community came up about HP fan fiction. I had recently discovered fan fiction from another fandom I belong to and decided to read HP fan fiction. I'm more into the romance stories, and man I did not know there were so many pairings. I was just curious about them, and it spiraled from there. Now I actively search for HP fan fiction and specific pairings. There are so many I haven't read. My first HP fan fiction was like a Christmas short. It was simple, and not very exciting (I'm not a great writer).

What are your biggest plot holes and errors in Harry Potter that have always bothered you?

      For example:
Moody puts Harry’s name in the GOF under a fourth school, so he’s the only competitor for that school and has to be chosen. However, the second Dumbledore read the slip of parchment with Harry’s name, he should have seen whatever fake school Harry was entered under.

Even though owls are beautiful, I really am a cat person. I probably would have taken a cat to Hogwarts, spending my days off, evenings, and early mornings with them snuggled up.

What about you? What kind of pet would you have taken to Hogwarts?

This is a character that is easy to hate. He's spoiled, selfish, and is just an all around brat. However, I've been thinking about a bit. Was he really that way by nature or was he just acting that way because of how he was raised? Harry had been treated badly by his aunt and uncle from the start. Dudley,  being an impressionable youngster, saw this and decided that Harry was bad because of how the two adults he trusted the most acted towards Harry. They showered Dudley with love and gave into his every wish, even when he was throwing a tantrum so he saw them as loving parents. He was a violent bully, because his dad encouraged it either by modeling it with Harry or just using the whole "boys will be boys" argument. When you're spoiled it's probably hard to handle yourself rationally when being told "no," even by peers.

However, throughout the series, Dudley picks on Harry a little bit less. Like, a smidge each book. We don't see too much of him in the sixth book, but then in the last book he surprises everyone by telling Harry he's not a waste of space. Is it possible that as he grew up, he realized that how Harry had been treated was wrong? That maybe Dudley wasn't too bad of a person by nature, and that the only reason he was horrible when he was little was because that's what he was seeing at home?

Just curious as to what your thoughts are. I'm not his biggest fan (or even at all), but it seems he matured.
