HBO’s Harry Potter series is already shaping up to be one of the most talked about projects in years. With filming underway at Leavesden Studios and beyond, the cast announcements are rolling in thick and fast. Fans are buzzing, critics are watching closely, and the magic is starting to feel real all over again. Let’s dive into everything we know so far and have a closer look at the characters we’ll be meeting once more...

The Golden Trio

At the heart of it all are our three leads. Dominic McLaughlin has been cast as Harry Potter. Young but with the right grit, he’ll be carrying the weight of the Boy Who Lived on his shoulders. The series has gone out of its way to match the actors’ ages to the book timeline, which means we’ll finally see Harry growing up alongside the audience in a way that feels authentic.

Arabella Stanton is stepping into the shoes of Hermione Granger. By all accounts, she has the intelligence and spark to bring the brightest witch of her age to life. Fans are already pointing out her striking resemblance to the Hermione described in the books, which adds an exciting layer of accuracy.

Alastair Stout has been confirmed as Ron Weasley. His natural humour and charm should be perfect for balancing the heavier tones of the story, while still showing Ron’s bravery when it matters most.

Hogwarts Professors

The teaching staff is just as impressive as the students. John Lithgow has been cast as Albus Dumbledore, bringing a touch of gravitas and wisdom to the role. Many fans are curious to see how he’ll differentiate his portrayal from Michael Gambon and Richard Harris, but with his acting chops, he’s got plenty to offer.

Janet McTeer takes on Professor McGonagall. She has the authority, warmth, and sharp wit that make McGonagall such a crucial presence in Hogwarts.

Severus Snape... TBC

Nick Frost will be Hagrid, and this is perhaps one of the most fun casting decisions so far. Known for his comedic timing but also his big heart, Frost seems ready to capture both the gentle giant and the protector who would do anything for Harry and his friends.

Luke Thallon will portray Professor Quirrell, the nervous Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher hiding a dangerous secret. His casting hints at a more layered performance than we’ve seen before.

Paul Whitehouse has been confirmed as Filch, the ever grumpy caretaker of Hogwarts. With Whitehouse’s talent, we can expect both humour and menace in his portrayal.

Returning Legend

One of the biggest cheers from fans came with the news that Warwick Davis is returning to play Professor Flitwick. Having a familiar face from the original films is a powerful way to link the old with the new. Flitwick may not be a central character, but his presence will feel like coming home to many fans.

Additional Hogwarts Staff

Sirine Saba is joining as Professor Sprout, head of Hufflepuff House and Herbology master. Richard Durden has been cast as Professor Binns, the ghostly History of Magic teacher. And Bríd Brennan will take on Madam Pomfrey, the matron who always seems to be patching up injured students. These roles round out the school and give Hogwarts its full sense of life.

Students and Friends

The Weasley family is well represented with casting news for Ginny, Fred, George, and Percy. This ensures the Burrow will be buzzing with energy and mischief.

Elijah Oshin is taking on Dean Thomas, a Gryffindor who deserves more spotlight. Finn Stephens and William Nash will portray Crabbe and Goyle, Draco Malfoy’s infamous sidekicks.

Leigh Gill has been cast as Griphook, one of the key goblins of Gringotts Bank. His addition reminds us that the wider wizarding world is also being carefully built.

Muggles and Ministry

Yes, even the non-magical world is accounted for. Vernon and Petunia Dursley have been cast, along with Cornelius Fudge, the Minister for Magic. These characters may not wield wands, but they shape Harry’s journey in their own ways.

Filming and Release

Filming began in the summer of 2025 and has been spotted across London and surrounding areas, with Privet Drive and King’s Cross being recreated for key scenes. Leavesden Studios, the original home of the Harry Potter films, is once again at the center of production. The show is expected to release in 2027, with each season covering one of the seven books.

The Bigger Picture

While excitement is high, some voices from the past are skeptical. Chris Columbus, director of the first two films, has questioned whether the series is offering enough new material or if it risks feeling like a retread. But with a whole new generation of actors and storytellers involved, many fans are eager to see how the series can expand on details the films had to leave out.

Final Thoughts

The Hogwarts Express is definitely leaving the station, and the momentum is only building. With a mix of fresh talent and a few returning legends, the HBO Harry Potter series feels poised to bring the books to life in ways we’ve only imagined.

What do you think so far… are you most excited about the trio, the professors, or the return of Warwick Davis? And which character casting are you still holding your breath for?
