September 1 isn’t just another day on the calendar for us it’s Hogwarts Day. Since the early days of fandom, platform 9¾ at King’s Cross Station turned into the place to be every year. Crowds of fans in robes, wands in hand, gathering around the departure boards, waiting for that cheeky 11 a.m. announcement for the Hogwarts Express magic in the real world. I remember reading how in 2023 thousands still showed up, even when trains were on strike, just to revel in the moment together.

That live countdown, sometimes hosted by familiar faces like Sam Thompson, made the event feel like something bigger than just a photo op it was a collective eruption of nerd joy. Once, a fan even proposed to his girlfriend mid-announcement… a real-life love story unfolding amid wizarding cheers. But lately things have shifted. Stations started discouraging fans from coming, citing safety concerns and overcrowding. In 2024, when thousands gathered, there was no grand announcement and the silence was deafening. Some booed. Many felt crestfallen.

The tradition felt abruptly clipped…

By 2025, it was official the in-person event at King’s Cross was officially canceled. No countdown, no Hogwarts Express lighting up the board. It was heartbreaking for many. Fans wrote on forums such as:

“It used to be this cute little gathering, but it blew up over the years… crowd control just became a nightmare.”

“So upset… I’ve never been and was planning on going this year…”

One post carried the sentiment of a generation of fandom: rituals evolve and losing one like 1 September at King’s Cross stung.

But here’s the twist, our magic didn’t vanish.

The celebration lives on, just in new forms. Warner Bros and Wizarding World shifted the festivities online: livestreams with giveaways, a YouTube special, virtual countdowns, and even a competition to celebrate at the Studio Tour next to the actual Hogwarts Express.

Other corners of the world filled the gap. From Grand Central Station in New York to a big fan-event in Hamburg, the spirit of “Back to Hogwarts” popped up wherever Potterheads gathered…

Remember too the platform 9¾ experience at King’s Cross all year round the trolley half-stuck in the wall, the souvenir shop, the photo frame. That small shrine continues to be a comfort for fans. And unsurprisingly, September 1 still turns heads even without announcements…

So here’s the thing: 1 September remains a big deal. Maybe our rituals changed shape, but we still show up virtually or in person sharing memories and carrying the torch forward.

What are your plans for this year’s Hogwarts Day? Watching the livestream? Doing a mini countdown with friends? Dressing up and conjuring the magic wherever you are? Let’s keep the tradition alive new quirks, same heart…
