A Nostalgic Reflection – The Adults on the Original Harry Potter Poster We’ve Lost

I stumbled upon a nostalgic moment recently, looking at the original poster for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, you realise that every adult featured there has since passed away. It’s a bittersweet reminder of how these extraordinary actors shaped not just the film, but our imagination.

 

Let’s pay tribute to each with a deeper look at their role and performance in Philosopher’s Stone:

 

Richard Harris

– Professor Albus Dumbledore

 

The wise, gentle headmaster of Hogwarts, whose soft-spoken warmth made a lasting impression. Harris brought a grandfatherly kindness to the role, perfectly embodying the book’s version of Dumbledore. Sadly, he passed away in October 2002, not long after the film’s release, succumbing to Hodgkin’s disease.

 

 

Alan Rickman

– Professor Severus Snape

 

Rickman’s portrayal of Snape remains iconic, haunted, complex, and brimming with restrained emotion. His tone and delivery added layers of ambiguity that kept fans guessing his true motives for years. He died in early 2016 from pancreatic cancer, leaving a void in the franchise and in our hearts  .

 

 

Robbie Coltrane

– Rubeus Hagrid

 

With his booming laugh, tender heart, and giant stature, Coltrane turned Hagrid into a beloved father figure. He blended gruff humor with warm protectiveness, the perfect combination for magical mischief and heartfelt mentoring. He passed away in October 2022 after health complications.

 

 

Richard Griffiths

– Uncle Vernon Dursley

 

As the notoriously grumpy and intolerant uncle, Griffiths made Vernon unforgettably vile, but behind the scenes, he was reportedly kind and supportive to the younger cast. His performance brought Harry’s difficult home life to sharp, emotional relief. Griffiths died in 2013 from complications after heart surgery.

 

Maggie Smith

– Professor Minerva McGonagall

 

Sharp-witted, fiercely loyal, and brimming with silent authority, Smith’s McGonagall balanced disciplinarian with fierce protector. Her presence added gravitas and wit. She recently died in September 2024, exactly one year after Michael Gambon (who succeeded Harris as Dumbledore) passed away.
