Max has ordered the first ever #HarryPotter scripted television series, a faithful adaptation of the iconic books. #StreamOnMax
 

After rumours began several weeks ago, HBO Max has confirmed that a Harry Potter TV series has been greenlit. They tweeted that; “Max has ordered the first ever Harry Potter scripted television series, a faithful adaptation of the iconic books.” This was part of a huge raft of announcements to coincide with the streaming channel’s name change to Max.

 

During the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming call today, it was revealed that the series will be a "faithful adaptation" of the novels. A new cast will be playing the characters, and the series has been given a massive 10-year commitment. It's worth noting, however, that 10 years doesn't necessarily mean 10 seasons - just that the series will play out over the course of a decade.

JK Rowling will be serving as executive producer.
 

“We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way,” HBO & Max Chairman Casey Bloys said. “Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.

 

 

The company is receiving blowback on Twitter for including Rowling in the new series, given her increasingly transphobic remarks in the past few years, with some even advocating fans not to watch the new show in order to avoid financially supporting the author. While it’s not confirmed whether the original Harry Potter film cast will return to the show in any capacity, stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint all supported the transgender community in the wake of Rowling’s comments in 2020, making it possible that they wouldn’t participate given her involvement.
