Is Merope Riddle (nee Gaunt) responsible for Voldemort

There was an interesting article in the news section, claiming Merope’s decisions leading to the birth of her son Tom are possibly responsible for him becoming a mass murdering sociopath.

Mothers play a vital role in the Harry Potter series, therefore I think this topic is worth a little discussion. 

Do you think it is possible that the way someone is conceived influences their personality?

I do see evidence that substance abuse by one of the parents may harm the egg or the sperm, resulting in “compromised genetics”. It is never clearly said, if Merope used an Imperious or a love potion to get Tom Riddle to marry and stay with her for that year. But somehow I have my doubts that a love potion would have had any effect on the baby. If the mother was the one to take it regularly, that would be a different discussion, but if it was the case at all, then it was the father who had it in his system. Likewise with the Imperius.

 

The article quotes JK Rowling saying that Tom might not have turned into Voldemort had his mother lived or had a loving home been found for him. On that I can agree. 

One might argue that Harry didn’t grow up in a loving home, either, and turned out rather differently. But I would like to make the point that Harry did have some time with both his parents who loved him deeply. He may not be able to access those early memories, but they are there, part of who he is. Harry knew love, while Tom didn’t.

 

Merope surely didn’t die, because she didn’t love her son. I’ve read that claim somewhere as well, that had she loved her son more, she would have lived. I don’t believe that. That was not really her choice to make. 

 

So, what do you guys think, did Tom Riddle turn into Voldemort because of nature (damaged genetic material die to love potion or spell) or nurture (no loving family to grow up in)?
