Fourth-year Ravenclaw student Myrtle Fawcett hesitantly took her first steps up the narrow spiral staircase that led to the Astronomy Tower as the sun was setting in the castle grounds. Under her robes was a small, weathered journal that she clutched—a relic she had found in the school’s restricted archives. She had found inside a bunch of cryptic entries about a tradition of which she had never heard called the ‘Nightglass Vigil’ where students used starlight magic to predict future calamities in the wizarding world.

Myrtle’s heart pounded as she reached the tower’s uppermost ledge. The wand barely glowed faint blue sparks as she whispered the incantation from the journal, and they drifted out as wispy shapes in the air. Suddenly, she was not alone. A ripple of moonlight produced a tall figure which turned out to be a portrait-ghost of Elysande Nightglass, a Slytherin from centuries past. Her translucent features were kind, but with old secrets.

The origins of the Nightglass Vigil were explained by Elysande, telling how a few students, from all Houses at Hogwarts, would meet in secret and exchange knowledge beyond the bounds of Hogwarts’ regular teaching. The stars were used to predict of impending conflicts, alliances formed in shadow, and even to catch a glimpse of great discoveries. And so, their prophecies were recorded, locked away, feared to be too dangerous for those who might take an interest. The knowledge was guarded by Elysande and condemned to half-portrait, half-spirit existence in the tower.

Myrtle was hit by a rush of excitement and responsibility coursing through her senses. She promised to reignite the Vigil in order to bring students together to pursue mysteries that might point the wizarding world’s future. Elysande’s image flickered and the spirit entrusted Myrtle to a single name to begin her quest, a Gryffindor classmate who’s name she never would have thought had an interest in starlight magic.

The next day, Myrtle uploaded some of her experience to an unofficial forum for Hogwarts students, a forum known as the Wizarding Wireless Club, which was an unofficial forum where Hogwarts students discussed rumors and stories. Hushed whispers about the Nightglass Vigil began to spread throughout the castle corridors, people gathering in secret and speculating feverishly. A new vigil had started for Elysande Nightglass and it was a clandestine era for Hogwarts students, one where prophecy, tradition and the powerful aspect of collective magic would become blurred.
