How desperate was Severus Snape?

It's getting colder and darker. Time for blankets on the couch, tea, biscuits and Harry Potter on the telly. It's a family tradition.

 

While re-watching the movies (We have reached "The Half-Blood Prince" by now.) a thought came to mind:

Someone as knowledgeable, well-read and involved as Severus Snape was surely aware of the curse on the DADA teaching position. After Dumbledore refused to hire Tom Riddle for the job no teacher ever lasted longer than one school year, either getting fired or getting killed. We as readers or viewers only witness Quarrel, Lockheart, Lupin,  Crouch Jr. disguised as Moody, Umbridge, Snape (who doesn't finish the year) and Carrow, but there must have been quite a few before them.

 

Yet @ProfessorSnape steadfastly applied for the position every year since starting his teaching career at Hogwarts.

Did he believe he could break the curse?

Did he think his knowledge on the subject was so superior that teaching it to the next generation was worth the risk?

Did he think the curse wouldn't inflict him, since he was a follower of the Dark Lord already?

 

We talked about that question a lot and I am asking myself - was Severus maybe that desperate to get out of his deal with Dumbledore that he was willing to risk even his life? Was getting fired from Hogwarts or even dying preferable to living under the rule of yet another master?

 

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter.
