I just need to rant a bit

I am currently question my latest life choices, specifically returning to University to finally get a degree. 25 years ago this part of my life was a lot of fun, in spite of the stress and the financial worries. Alas, being a student at 24 is vastly different from being a student at almost 49. My fellow students are marginally older than my oldest daughter. In the beginning, when I entered a room, people would automatically assume I was the professor and fell quiet. I haven’t really found my tribe yet, so it is a rather lonely experience.

Today I am responsible not only for myself, but for a family of my own. When classes are over and the others head for the library or the pub or just simply home to relax, I hurry back home to pick up my kids, clean, cook, shop, help with homework, care for my elderly parents and listen to my husband. When all that is done, I hit the books. Sleep has become a luxury.

 

And worst of all - I am only doing what I love - teaching - one day a week. The students suffer, the colleagues suffer, I suffer. Nobody at Uni  actually needs me, it makes no difference if I am here or not. My absence at school leaves a mark. It is where I am needed.

 

Guys, what do I do? Soldier on, eyes on the price? After all, if all goes well, it’s just another year and by autumn next year I should be done.

Ort do I talk to my principal, ask him if there is really no chance of hiring me without a stupid degree that isn’t even in teaching. Just stupid literature.

I literally write exams in stuff that I will NEVER EVER need or use in class. When you are younger and haven’t decided on a profession yet that is just a nagging feeling. But I actually KNOW that I don’t need this. All for a slip of paper from a University.
