Hermione's and Ron's view on Voldermort

Why Did Hermione and Ron take the fight against Voldermort so seriously to the extent of going with Harry on the Horcrux Hunt?  They could have very easily stayed at their homes and returned to Hogwarts for the new year and helped to keep Dumbledore's army active alongside Luna and Ginny.  Also Voldermort did not kill the families of Ron and Hermione like he killed Harry's Parents.  Anyway This is something I have always been curious about and I look forward to some amazing replies.
