When Richard Harris was initially offered the role of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the  in 2005. Shortly before filming began on the Sorcerer's stone, he told the filmmakers no. According th the producer David Heyman, it took a charm cast by a little girl for him to reverse course. You see, the actort's granddaughter demanded he accept the role, saying she would never speak to him again if he didn't. How could he say no? Harris finally relented and donned Dumbledore's stately robes. He would play the part in just 2 films before his health unfortunately began to fail in 2002. "I visited [Harris] in the hospital when he was really sick, and when it came time to make the third film, he was clinging on , saying, 'Don't recast!' "was determined to do it," Heyman told EW in 2005. Shortly before filming began on The Prisoner Of Azkaban, Harris succumbed to Hodgkin's disease. The actor was a formidable presence and on set just as he was throughout his life, when he was as well known for his bacchanalian adventures with fellow bons vivants Peter O'toole and Rickard Burton as he was for such roles as the soulful singing King Arthur in 1967's camelot. "These were really hard shoes to fill," Heyman said about the recasting. The job would fall to new director alfonso Cuaron, who would helm just a single Potter film. "Alfonso looked far and wide to find someone to replace someone as irreplaceable as Rickard Harris, and he cast Michael Gambon," Heyman recalled."[he's] one of the greats." other actors may have fretted about filling those magic slippers, but Gambon a theater vet who'd starred in films such as Gosford Prk and the Insider was game. "I played Dumbledore as i am" he said in 2004. " A little winky. A little like a hippie." He also played him in a light, flowing gown "he had been forbidding in those heavy robes" with his beard tied and tucked into his shirt. Why? "Because it's funny." Heyman was thrilled with what Gambon brought to the part. "What i love about what michael did, very early on, was give a performance that paid tribute to Richard by adding a slight Irish lilt to his accent but at the same time made Dumbledore all his own." We'd expect nothing less from one of the greatest wizards of all time. Now, which is you Favorite Dumbledore? I feel like i should pick Richard Harris because i feel bad for him, but in my mind i pick Michael Gambon, he just did a better Dumbledore in My opinion.
