HBO Announces Christmas Day Premiere for New Harry Potter Series

Well, this is either going to be absolutely brilliant or one of the most closely scrutinised TV shows ever made.

 

 

The new Harry Potter series is officially arriving on Christmas Day 2026.

 

Yep. December 25th.

 

The first season will adapt Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, with eight episodes planned. So instead of trying to squeeze the entire book into one film, the series has a lot more room to actually tell the story.

 

 

And this is where I think things get interesting.

The original Philosopher’s Stone film was already nearly two and a half hours long, but there was still loads from the book that had to be shortened or left out. The TV series can take its time.

 

We could get more of the Dursleys. More of Harry discovering the wizarding world. More time at Diagon Alley. More lessons at Hogwarts. More of Hermione being Hermione, which frankly is never a bad thing. And hopefully… more Peeves. Seriously, how did we never get Peeves in the original films?

There’s also a pretty impressive cast behind the three new leads. Dominic McLaughlin is Harry, Arabella Stanton is Hermione and Alastair Stout is Ron. John Lithgow is taking on Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu is Snape, Janet McTeer is McGonagall and Nick Frost is Hagrid. But here’s the really interesting bit. The first teaser apparently pulled in 277 million views in its first 48 hours, making it HBO and HBO Max’s most watched trailer ever according to the reported figures.

 

 

That is… a lot of people. And it shows just how enormous the interest still is, more than 25 years after the first film came out. Of course, the big question is whether people actually want another version of Harry Potter.

 

Personally, I think the answer depends entirely on how faithful they are to the books. If this is basically the films again with different actors, what's the point? But if they actually use the extra screen time to bring back the things that were cut, expand the characters and properly explore Hogwarts life… then I'm interested.

 

Christmas Day, eight episodes, a completely new cast and potentially seven seasons covering all seven books.

I'm cautiously optimistic. But I still want Peeves.
