The Harry Potter Café in Edinburgh Has Reopened After a Long Fire Closure

Big news for fans of Harry Potter and Edinburgh’s literary history… The Elephant House café has officially reopened its doors after more than four years since it was badly damaged by a fire. It’s the spot many associates with J.K. Rowling’s early writing days on the Harry Potter series, and today it’s welcoming visitors again with its familiar charm.

 

 

The fire broke out on George IV Bridge back in August 2021 and caused serious damage to the iconic building. The blaze was so intense that firefighters battled it for hours, and work to restore and repair the café took far longer than anyone hoped. Fans have been watching and waiting for this moment… for years the place was closed and covered up, yet people still came by just to take photos of the outside and remember where Rowling once sat with her notebooks. The owner, David Taylor, has said the reopening feels like a dream come true after so much effort, repairs and fundraising to get this old favourite ready again.

 

Inside, many things that made the cafe legendary remain… there’s a portrait of Rowling and other famous Scottish authors on the wall and the atmosphere still pulls in tourists, writers and Harry Potter lovers from all over the world. Even though Rowling herself has said she actually started the first draft elsewhere, plenty of fans still cherish this place as part of the story.
