Sirius Black-godfather to Harry Potter-is a pure blood wizard and brother to Regulus Black. Born on November 3, 1959, Sirius clashed with his family's ties to Slytherin House, pure-blood elitism and involvement in the Dark Arts. His friendships with James Potter and Remus lupin were influential during his time at Hogwarts, and the three of them-along with Peter Pettigrew-called themselves the marauders. Like his friends, Sirius became an unregistered Animagus, taking the shape of a large, shaggy black dog; this earned him the nicknames padfoot and Snuffles. During the First Wizarding War, Sirius joined the Order of the Phoenix. When Lily and james Potter were murdered because of Peter Pettigrew's disloyalty, Sirius was sent to the wizarding prison Azkaaban for murdering Pettigrew and twelve Muggles. Only Sirius and Pettigrew knew Pettigrew had faked his death and Sirius had been wrongly imprisoned. In 1993, Sirius escapes Azkaban. Hiding in his Animagus form at Hogwarts, he plots to both take his revenge on Pettigrew and reconnect with his godson, Harry. During this attempt, Sirius is captured by the Maraunders'old rival (now Hogwarts Potions professor) Severus Snape but manages to escape on a hippogriff with help from Harry. During the Second Wizarding War, Sirius rejoins the Order of the Phoenix but is unable to actively participate because ofhis status as a wanted criminal. Sirius duels his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, is struck with an unknown spell and falls to his death through the Veil in the Death Chamber.
