So there’s a rumor making the rounds that has really set the fandom buzzing. Word is that HBO’s Harry Potter series might be auditioning female actors for the role of Voldemort. Some are already calling it “Lady Voldemort.” Nothing has been confirmed by the studio but the idea alone has opened a whole cauldron of discussion.

 

The chatter seems to have started when reports surfaced that casting calls for Voldemort were not restricted to men. That immediately got people speculating that the show might take the character in a very different direction.

On the other hand a few things are clear. Cillian Murphy’s name was thrown around a lot as a possible choice for the Dark Lord but he has flat out denied it. Ralph Fiennes who played Voldemort in the original films has gone on record saying he thinks Murphy would be a brilliant pick if it happened. That support is nice to hear but it still does not answer the question of whether the role might be gender swapped.

 

If the rumor is true it would be one of the boldest creative changes the series could make. It could shift the way Voldemort’s story feels on screen and maybe even add new layers to how the character is understood. At the same time it risks upsetting fans who want a faithful page to screen version.

 

So what do you think… would a female Voldemort bring something fresh to the story or would it feel too far removed from the source? If you were in charge of casting who would you put in the role?
