On Harry’s first night at Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Professor McGonagall says, ‘While you’re here, your house will be like your family’. This becomes especially true for Harry, as his friends and classmates in Gryffindor become the first true family he’s ever known. Students at Hogwarts show their house pride in a variety of ways: earning house points, cheering for their team at Quidditch games and, of course, wearing their house colours. Among the most popular pieces of housethemed apparel are the classic house scarves. 

This design is worked in the round from the bottom up with no purling.

Needles

• 5 mm / US 8, 40 cm / 16 in. long circular needles or size needed to obtain correct tension

• Stitch marker 

• 6 mm / US J-10 crochet hook 

• Tapestry needle TENSION 18 sts and 23 rnds = 10 cm / 4 in. in St st

Notes

• Scarf is worked in the round in one piece from the bottom up. Work stripes using Jogless Join method. When attaching fringe, be sure to have both layers held together to flatten the tube into scarf. 

Stitch Patterns

Stocking Stitch (any number of sts) Worked in the round, knit every rnd. 

House Colour Stripes (see charts for correct colours) Knit 5 rnds with colour B, 5 rnds with colour A, then 5 rnds with colour B.

Scarf 

With colour A, CO 80 sts. Pm and join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts.

*Knit 27 rnds, or for approx 12 cm /  4¾ in. 

Work Rnds 1–15 of appropriate House Colours Chart (chart below).

Rep from * 9 more times, then knit  27 rnds in A, or until piece measures approx 198 cm / 78 in. from CO edge, or desired length. 

Cast off kwise.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block to measurements. 

Cut 80 pieces of colour A, each approx 10 cm / 4 in. long. Using crochet hook and working through both layers of cast-on or cast-off edge, attach a piece of yarn in each pair of sts across both edges. Trim to 4 cm / 1½ in. long.
