Coincidental Moments.

Recommended Posts

The title doesn't do this justice. Basically, have there ever been any moments in your life where you used a Harry Potter spell in normal conversation or mentioned someone's name and they've appeared?

I've had quite a few but here's two instances.

  • Waiting for my lecturer (who we'll call C) and I text my friend: Accio C. As soon as it sent, he walked round the corner.
  • Literally today, mentioned to one friend the name of another (Imo). Imo popped up on messenger as soon as it sent.

It's times like this it's like I'm magic. I just have the power to summon people, whether I need them or not.

Have you had any moments like this?

A wizard school is opening in Gloucestershire this Halloween and it will teach aspiring witches and wizards all they need to know. The four-day course starts on Monday, October 28 and runs until Thursday, October 31 where you will spend four magical days immersed in the World of Wizardry.

The cost for the programme is £180 and runs from 10am - 4.30pm Monday through to Thursday at St Andrews Church in Cheltenham .

This is the first time the Harry Potter-themed school has been launched at Halloween having previously run The School of Wizardry during the summer.

The spellbinding course is run by Cheltenham Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and their Principal Nicola Carter, also known as dotty Professor Magnolia McGonagal.
During the school, the magical professors will be dressed in cloaks and wizards aged six and above will have the chance to learn about all things magic - this includes magnificent music, drama and magic masterclasses with professional magicians from The Magic Circle.
During the four-day course, aspiring witches and wizards will be taught all the core classes including acting magic, live owls, hubble bubble choir, conjuring, transfiguration make up, wand stage combat and the care of magical creatures.

What's more, they will even have the chance to see real live owls courtesy of Walks with Hawks. And if that wasn't enough, next summer the Harry Potter-themed event will be back along with a pirate theme which will feature exotic animals such as snakes, spiders and parrots. The School of Wizardry has proved popular and over the last three years, the school has given out around 70 scholarships as Nicola explains: "Sometimes the money can be a bit out of people's wizardry pockets."

For more information  or to apply you can email the magic team on info@camda.org or call 07545345655.

Small Moments in the Films You've Noticed

TL;DR: Are there any small moments you've noticed rewatching the films?
A lot of film teachers I've had, and other film students I've spoken to, whenever you rewatch a film you always notice something different. I had a film lecturer mention to their first year class at uni about a story I told her. I was rewatching Pan's Labyrinth for my coursework, and I noticed little motifs of the faun and the more adult themes that I hadn't noticed before. One of the students in her class said, 'I've already watched La La Land, so why do I have to watch it again?' It's just a moment that stuck with me, and even with the Harry Potter films, I've noticed small moments that I may have missed on first, or earlier viewing.

Let me take you back to my first year at college. We had to analyse a sequence from a film, and I chose The OWL scene from Order of the Phoenix. I repeatedly watched this scene, and even now I would definitely go back and rewrite the essay (which on a slight tangent, I found yesterday). But what I noticed is the dialogue between the twins, which is almost drowned out by the fireworks and the Fireworks score playing over it. One of the twins (I think it's Fred) says, before releasing the dragon,
      Fred: Ready when you are.
It took me a good seven or eight listens to hear it, and it's so subtle but works so well with the scene. Like it's all pre-planned except the grand finale. But I love how it's just inserted, like amidst all the chaos, they are still the ones to pull it all off.

What are some moments you've seen from the films that maybe you didn't on your first few watches?
I'd love to know. I'll share another one mine on this thread soon.

Nashville Catholic School Bans 'Harry Potter' Books Because They Contain Real Magic Spells

Students at a US school will no longer be allowed to read about the adventures of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley after they were banned for including ‘real spells’.

Reverend Dan Reehill at the Catholic school in Tennessee explained that after consulting with several US and Roman exorcists over J.K. Rowling's series, he was advised to remove them from the library.
In an email to the parents of students at St Edward Catholic School, he reportedly wrote: "These books present magic as both good and evil, which is not true, but in fact a clever deception.

"These books present magic as both good and evil, which is not true, but in fact a clever deception. The curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells; which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text," Reehil wrote in the email.

Expanding on the school’s stance, Hammel made it clear that they would not stand in the way of students reading the books in their own time, outside of school:
“Should parents deem that this or any other media to be appropriate we would hope that they would just guide their sons and daughters to understand the content through the lens of our faith. We really don’t get into censorship in such selections other than making sure that what we put in our school libraries is age appropriate materials for our classrooms.“

JK Rowling. On accusations Harry Potter promotes Satanism: “A very famous writer once said, 'A book is like a mirror. If a fool looks in, you can't expect a genius to look out.'

What are your thoughts on the matter?
